OUR STORY

HOW WE STARTED

We didn’t start mayamada with a formal business plan. Far from it! It actually started with an email…one that came out of the blue with an idea to make Japanese inspired t-shirts. There were no characters at that point, just an idea to make t-shirts to sell at our former university…

“THE FANTASTIC FIVE BECAME JUST TWO”

LEARNING FROM FAILURE

Our original group of five engineering and computer science graduates got caught up in the excitement and never stopped to consider if we actually knew how to build a brand. Turns out we didn’t! After a couple years the idea faded and what started as the Fantastic Five became just two (the story gets better, promise).

WHAT IS MAYAMADA?

A now Determined Duo went back to the drawing board and came up with a new concept. We took our love of creativity, characters and storytelling and fused it with an anime and manga style to create our own universe. A television network universe with an anthropomorphic cast. All we needed was an artist, so we took a trip to London Comic Con and met Pinali. The rest is history in the making…

OUR BELIEFS

It’s not just about the products. We believe in the power of creativity to make our world a more productive, engaging and fun place to be. We also believe that everyone is capable of being creative – yes that includes you!

A HELPING HAND

We returned to London Comic Con as exhibitors and got a great response to our brand, clothing and characters…plus a ton of great cosplay photos! We knew we were onto something and enrolled into the Prince’s Trust enterprise program to get our heads about the business of creativity

“WE KNEW WE WERE ONTO SOMETHING AND ENROLLED INTO THE PRINCE’S TRUST ENTERPRISE PROGRAM”

PRESS RECOGNITION

Since getting Prince’s Trust support we’ve been able to build the mayamada brand in a real way. We produced our first full comic, Samurai Chef, through a Kickstarter campaign. It’s since featured in NEO magazine and awarded 4 out of 5 stars! The mayamada brand has also been featured in Vogue and GQ magazines, MyM Magazine, MCV Magazine, The Voice Newspaper, The Evening Standard and London Live!

MEETING FANS

But what really blows us away is the people that come to us at events and conventions to tell us how much they love the brand and characters. Inspiring others to be creative will always be the main goal. That’s why we attend comic conventions and events in the UK and around the world.

BUILDING A COMMUNITY

We also building a community through our own events. From anime screenings to collaborations with Tutti Frutti for a Frozen Yogurt Party and partnering with StreetFest. We started over very own video game event called GamePad! and are now partnering with games giant Ubisoft to champion social gaming.

GIVING BACK

Giving back and inspiring a new generation of creatives and entrepreneurs to make a social impact is a big deal for us. We launched our #BeCreative campaign in 2015 about inspiring young people to sharpen their creative intelligence through workshops and partnering with charities involved in the support and development of young people.

STAY TUNED…

The mayamada universe continues to grow with new comics and fantastic characters. You can get involved, discover our universe of characters, sharing your creative work or come and see us at a convention. We’d love to hear from you!

The lesson is to keep persevering. Be different and above all, #BeCreative!
